The 57th Grammy Nominees and Predictions

#MusicMonday

Oh the famous Grammys. When I was in school studying for my degree in Music Production, I studied under many very successful professors. These were award winning professors. I remember attending a live online lecture one evening when my professors told us that he received a form to place his votes for the Grammys. I thought, “Wow, this man is really a big deal!” Well folks, I am not a “big deal,” but I am going to give my take on the upcoming (Feb 8th at 8/7c) Grammys anyways. I am going to share my opinion on the categories that I am familiar with, rather than every category because there is just too many.

Record of The Year

Fancy- Iggy Azalea
Chandelier- Sia
Stay With Me- Sam Smith
Shake it Off- Taylor Swift
All About That Bass- Meghan Trainor

My Choice: This was a hard decision for me because I am really in love with all of these songs. I seen “Shake it Off,” “All About That Bass,” and “Fancy” live, so I have a different kind of love for them. I am in love with Sam Smith's “Stay With Me,” however since this is Record of the Year I need to think about all of the elements of this song, including production. I think that Taylor Swift's “Shake it Off” is the winner by far! This song completely blew away a lot of people. The pop elements mixes with Taylor Swift's sassiness definitely stood out. This was a breath of fresh air compared to her typical “break up” lyrics.

Album of The Year

Morning Phase- Beck
Beyoncé- Beyoncé
X- Ed Sheeran
In The Lonely Hour- Sam Smith
Girl- Pharrell Williams

My Choice: This is a difficult choice for me. Beyoncé will definitely win this one, but I'd have to go with Ed Sheeran's “X” album. I think that Ed Sheeran deserves this win. He has really come out and rocked the music scene. In his album you can hear him sing pop, R&B, with a bit of hip-hop in there somewhere. Ed Sheeran can sing, rap, or talk his way out of anything. His voice is absolutely beautiful and he is a very talented artist. He plays instruments, sings, and writes his own lyrics. After seeing him live, I just couldn't imagine anyone else more deserving of Album of the Year.

Song of The Year

All About That Bass- Meghan Trainor
Chandelier- Sia
Shake it Off- Taylor Swift
Stay With Me- Sam Smith
Take Me To Church- Hozier

My Choice:  I have to say “Stay With Me” because I cannot get enough of that song. Sam Smith came into the music scene and completely changed it. He introduced a sound that is completely different from anything that is out there right now. I can definitely see myself listening to “Stay With Me” years from now. It is a song that is absolutely beautiful. From Sam Smith's emotional voice, to the deep lyrics, to the smooth sound, “Stay With Me” deserves Song of The Year.

Best New Artist

Iggy Azalea
Bastille
Brandy Clark
Haim
Sam Smith

My Choice: Another difficult choice for me. I love Sam Smith and Iggy Azalea. It is funny because their music is completely opposite from the others. I think that Sam Smith has one particular style that he completely excels at, but being the type of artist that he is, I couldn't imagine him branching out very much. With that said, I believe that Iggy Azalea is the best new artist. She has already had a few hit songs and has collaborated with some incredible artists. Her songs are upbeat, fun, and real. She may be getting some negative press right now, but I am still excited about Iggy Azalea's new found fame.

Best Pop Solo Performance

All of Me- John Legend
Chandelier- Sia
Stay With Me- Sam Smith
Shake it Off- Taylor Swift
Happy- Pharrell

My Choice: Well this is a no brainer! Pharrell's “Happy” is a hit that everyone, young or old, cannot get enough of. I mean, just watch the video! It makes everyone dance and sing. I love this song and I am surprised it wasn't nominated for Song of the Year. Pharrell is incredibly talented and he definitely deserves this win!

Best Pop/Duo Performance

Fancy- Iggy Azalea & Charli XCX
A Sky Full of Stars- Coldplay
Say Something- A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera
Bang Bang- Jessie J, Ariana Grande, & Nicki Minaj
Dark Horse- Katy Perry & Juicy J

My Choice: Okay this is difficult. I am going to say, for sure, that Dark Horse is going to take the win on this one. I would choose “Say Something” because it was an incredible duo. A Great Big World is beautiful and incredible. Their music mixed with Christina Aguilera's heart wrenching voice really made for a beautiful song. This is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time. You can feel the emotion. This song deserves this win!

Best Pop Vocal Album

Ghost Stories- Coldplay
Bangerz- Miley Cyrus
My Everything- Ariana Grande
Prism- Katy Perry
X- Ed Sheeran

My Choice: Well this is an easy one. “X” by Ed Sheeran is definitely the best Pop Vocal Album. Ed Sheeran has a beautiful, fun, and unique voice.

Best Rock Performance

Gimme Somethin Good- Ryan Adams
Do I Wanna – Artic Monkeys
Blue Moon – Beck
Fever – The Black Keys
Lazaretto-Jack White

My Choice: People will hate me for this one, but I am going with Artic Monkeys. I seen them live last year and they are incredible performers!

Best Rock Song

Aint it Fun – Paramore
Blue Moon – Beck
Fever- The Black Keys
Gimme Something Good – Ryan Adams
Lazaretto- Jack White

My Choice: I have to go with Paramore on this one. I don't know if they have ever won a Grammy, but she really deserves it. I seen her live this year at the iHeart Radio Music Festival and she is a great musician. She is a great singer and treats her fans so well. Also, who doesn't love this song? It is so catchy and fun. I am shocked that these were the nominated songs though. I could name a few better songs that were more deserving of this category, but I will leave it to the professionals. 😉

Best Rock Album

Ryan Adams- Ryan Adams
Morning Phase- Beck
Turn Blue- The Black Keys
Hypnotic Eye- Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Songs of Innocence- U2

My Choice: I am a HUGE Tom Petty fan so I obviously think they deserves it. I love Hypnotic Eye too. I don't think they will win. I predict that The Black Keys will win.

Best R&B Performance Performance

Drunk In Love – Beyonce Feat Jay Z
New Flame – Chris Brown feat Usher & Rick Ross
It's Your World – Jennifer Hudson feat R. Kelly
Like This – Ledisi
Good Kisser- Usher

My Choice: I am not a huge B fan, but with the options here, I will definitely give this one to her and J. I mean they do deserve it. They perform great together and this song is HOT!! My Prediction is: They will win it! The world is obsessed with this Crazy Drunk In Love Duo 🙂

Best Rap Performance

3005- Childish Gambino
0 to 100/ The Catch Up- Drake
Rap God- Eminem
I- Kendrick Lamar
All I Need Is You- Lecrae

My Choice: Okay, if Eminem doesn't win this I will lose all faith in the professionals. haha. My choice is Eminem. He kills the rap game in this song because, well, he is Rap God.  I love Childish Gambino and Kendrick is a great lyricist, but Eminem has this one in the bag! My Prediction is that he will win this one.

Best Rap/Sung Collaboration

Blak Majik- Common feat Jnené Aiko
The Monster- Eminem Feat Rihanna
Tuesday- I Love Makonnen Feat Drake
Studio- Schoolboy Q feat BJ The Chicago Kid
Bound 2 – Kanye Feat Charlie Wilson

My Choice: The Monster with Em and RiRi. I don't know a single person that doesn't know and love this song. The story behind the song is great. They both have “monsters” and they are “monsters” in their own way. That is why they make a great team. This tour and this song is just all around impressive. They deserve this win. My prediction is that it is in between them or Kanye.

Best Rap Song

Anaconda- Nicki Minaj
Bound 2- Kanye & Charlie Wilson
I- Kendrick
We Dem Boyz- Wiz Khalifa
0 to 100/The Catch Up- Drake

My Choice: I really love Anaconda. I think it is a fun song, but does it deserve Best Rap Song? Not really. I don't really like the other songs. I guess if I were to choose one based solely on the song nominated, I will go with Anaconda, but I think the nominees are horrible.

Best Rap Album

The New Classic- Iggy Azalea
Because The Internet- Childish Gambino
Nobody's Smiling- Common
The Marshall Mathers LP2- Eminem
Oxymoron- Schoolboy Q
Blacc Hollywood- Wiz Khalifa

My Choice: Is it too easy for you to guess my choice? MMLP2 by Eminem! He definitely deserves this win! I love Common, Iggy, and Gambino, but Eminem is the BEST rapper in this group! His album was a great way to show off his new skills and to bring back some of the old Em!

Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media

American Hustle
Frozen
Get On Up: The James Brown Story
Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1
The Wolf of Wall Street

My Choice: I am LOVING this group! All of the soundtracks were incredible. I have to say though, that Guardians of the Galaxy completely blew me away with this compilation! They definitey deserve the win. However, I think Frozen may win this because people are OBSESSED with Frozen!

Best Music Video

We Exist- Arcade Fire
Turn Down For What- Lil John
Chandelier- Sia
Happy- Pharrell
The Golden Age- Wooodkid feat Max Richter

My Choice: Happy by Pharrell! How cool was this music video! How can you not love a bunch of happy people dancing just because they are happy!? This is the Music Video of the year in my opinion!
